HIV Stigma and Discrimination on Ethnic Biak in Biak

Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome (AIDS) is a collection of symptoms that are caused by the Human
Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Since the first reported AIDS cases
in Indonesia,
the number of cases increased gradually so that has become epidemic with the
status of the epidemic has been declared at the rate of a concentrated epidemic
level. Whereas in the provinces of Papua and West Papua epidemic status was
entered by the level generalized epidemic levels because of the prevalence of
HIV in the general population. People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) is a
heavy burden in life, where the problems it faces not only deal with the disease
condition, but is accompanied by social stigma that is very discriminatory.
Based on the research done so.
This type of research design
is a qualitative method of phenomenology. Research data collection was
conducted on 20 people with the informant in-depth interviews and observation.
Research data is then processed in the form of field notes which are then
classified with categorization finally found an answer until saturation of data
and study is discontinued by the method of thematic analysis.
The results showed that the
labeling given to people living with HIV in the form of thin, bone, old and
wrinkled face, given the stereotypes that men are sinners and the damned, the
separation of patients received is not received within the social environment,
the status of loss experienced is hilanganya confidence in the credibility and
ability of PLWHA previous state, discrimination obtained is isolated, and
ostracized in social life, get good service in restrictions on government
institutions and health facilities, while the efforts of the stigma and
discrimination of PLHIV is to force surrender and make efforts to avoid and
hide the status illness. Therefore, diperlunya local government support
together with health institutions in determining and setting policy on the
prevention of stigma and discrimination of PLHIV, for health care facilities to
better promote the professionalism of the service, and for people living with
HIV to participate more actively in supporting penyeberan information about HIV
/ AIDS to the community.
